Janie Yvonne McCullough

September 27, 1928 ~ October 30, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Janie Yvonne Sykes-McCullough was born to Jim and Essie Wright-Sykes on September 27, 1928, in Liberty County.

From a child she was baptized and longtime member of Trinity Valley Baptist Church, and worked in the finance department for the church.  Yvonne graduated from Liberty Training High School with honors.  She continued her desire for academic excellence graduating with honors from UCLA University.  Yvonne returned to Liberty, Texas and began teaching high school.  She taught history and civics and was a Coach for the girls High School basketball, and girls track teams for 45 years before retiring.  She never had any children of her own.  Over many years she taught hundreds of students, many of whom were like her own children.

Janie Yvonne Sykes married Carl McCullough, Jr., on March 6, 1965 in Liberty, Texas.  Yvonne enjoyed reading, sports, game shows and crossword puzzles.  She was an excellent cook.  She also kept up with politics and current events.

SHE WILL BE TRULY MISSED AND LOVED BY ALL.

Janie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl McCullough, Jr.; parents, Jim and Essie Sykes; brother, Robert Sykes; sisters, Johnnie Bell Sykes-Gorman, VerLee Warren, and Helen Anderson.

She leaves to honor her memory: nephews, George Warren, of Los Angeles, CA, Chris Sykes, of Santa Monica, CA, George D. Gorman, of Crosby, TX; niece, Deidra Sykes-Anderson, of Las Vegas, NV and nephew, Jubilant Sykes of Santa Monica, CA.  She also leaves a host of other great nieces and nephews, including: Great-Nephew, George D. (Skip) Gorman, Jr. and wife, Felicia.  Great-Great-Nephew, Al Driver, Jr.; Great-Great-Niece, Alexis Gorman and Great-Great-Nephew, Jordan Gorman.  She also leaves a host of in-laws, relatives and friends.

Our family is extremely grateful for each expression of love, concern and kindness extended to us during this time of our deepest loss.  We are forever thankful.  A special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. James and Dorothy Turner, and Lester and Neil Poullard of Crosby, TX.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 9:00 am - 11:00 am at Sterling-White Funeral Home with funeral services following at 11:00 am. Interment will be in Sterling White Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sterling-White Funeral Home, 11011 Crosby-Lynchburg Rd., Highlands, Texas 77562.
