Jimmy Darrell Davis

Jimmy Darrell “Pop” Davis, 87, of Highlands, Texas, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, July 18, 2017 and a celebration of life service on Wednesday afternoon, July 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Mike Haley will offer the eulogy and a prayer. Arrangements and services have been entrusted to Sterling-White Funeral Home, 11011 Crosby-Lynchburg Road, Highlands, Texas 77562.  Interment will be in Sterling-White Cemetery.

Jimmy was born May 10th, 1930 in Dallas, Texas to Margaret and Alton Davis. He started school in the 3rd grade because he didn’t want to go before that! Once in school he excelled and later in life could be counted on to share his knowledge. He attended Dawson High School and Baylor University. Jimmy served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Bronze Service Star as well as the Silver Service Medal and the Purple Heart. He was very proud that he served his country and protected our freedom.  In 1951, he married Maudice Grimes and had four children, Darrell, Terry, Raye Dean and Dixon.  He retired from Armco Steel in 1983 after many years of employment. Jimmy enjoyed giving to his community and along with his wife Maudice and other friends and community members founded the Highlands Youth Booster Club.  They provided scholarships to local youth, crowned a Miss Highlands each year and formed the Highlands Girls Softball League. He was a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where he served on the Safety Committee, the Baytown Youth Fair, and an FFA Honorary Lonestar Farmer.  His latest endeavor to brighten the lives of others was to bake and give away pies. After his wife of 58 years died in 2010, he needed something to fill his days so he used one of her recipes to bake a pie.  He baked more pies and gave some away and then it got around that Pop made great pies.  The pies brought in much needed money at fundraisers around Highlands, Crosby and Baytown and graced many holiday tables.  If you ate one of his famous pies you remembered it forever and wanted more. He gave children gold dollars and tipped waitresses with $2 bills – he enjoyed his last years in this way. Most precious to him was his family – he will be missed. Just for Pop, one last time – what do you need Pop? A little time and few kind words.

Jimmy is survived by his four children, Darrell (Nancy), Terry (Sharon), Raye Dean (Bill) and Dixon; eight grandchildren, Trisha (Bryan), Chris (Amy), Cody (Jack), Aaron (Lauren), Jamie (Ryan), Lauren (Spencer), Kelsie (Joel), and Morgan (Niki); five great-grandchildren, Brandon, Alicia, Madelynn, Calvin, and Remington and niece, Edna Love and husband Jim, as well as other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maudice Grimes Davis and his brothers, Teddy Joe and Bobby Ray Davis.

Honoring Jimmy as pall bearers are Aaron Davis, Morgan Harbison, Ryan Stippel, Brandon Franta, Spencer Black, and Joel Bustamante.
