Bertie Ickes

Bertie W. Ickes – age 95, went home to be with her LORD and Savior on February 20, 2020 in Houston, Texas. She was born May 27, 1924 in Mittie, Louisiana, the daughter of George Edwin Whitaker Sr. and Olivia Johnson Whitaker. She moved to Baytown seventy-five years ago from Grant, Louisiana and found the love of her life just across the alley from her home. She moved to Highlands with her family three years later and planted herself there and raised her family. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husband Thurmon J. Ickes Sr., brothers Everett Whitaker, Herman Whitaker, Comer Whitaker, Norris Whitaker, Dick Whitaker, sisters Zelma Harlow and Irma Nenno, as well as a son and daughter-in-law John Edwin and Cathy Ickes. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her sons: Thurmon “Joe” Ickes Jr. and wife Marsha; Jackie Ickes and wife Joan, and Jerry Ickes and wife Jeanene. In addition she leaves her brother George Whitaker Jr. and wife Leatha, sister Vera Lambert, and six grandchildren: John David Ickes and wife Annie; Scott Ickes and wife Kate; Christina Abaray and husband Steven; Jana Kirksey and husband Jonathan; Joey Ickes and wife Sierra; and Jack Kelly Ickes. She was blessed with 13 great-grandkids who were always in her heart and on her mind. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Bertie enjoyed gardening, especially Bluebonnets and helping others. She helped out at her Church and in the activities of her sons. 

Funeral services for Bertie will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Sterling White Funeral Home, 11011 Crosby Lynchburg Highlands, Texas.
