Gilbert Curtis Roeder

Gilbert Curtis Roeder, 89, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born August 20, 1928 in Fayetteville, Texas to Arthur and Elizabeth von Roeder, moved with his family to Crosby in 1934, and lived almost all of his life on the farm on which he grew up, a testimony to his love of and loyalty to the land. 

He is survived by his beloved wife, Billie LaJune Wilson Roeder; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bill Hoosier of Vidor, Texas; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Christy Roeder of Dayton; and his daughter, Susan Roeder of Humble; along with 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Alice Skrabanek and Earlene Skarpa; three stepdaughters, Kathryn and Marshall Limpic, Pam and Jim Hammonds, and Dee Ann and Troy Giles; and three stepsons, Duane and Wendy Chennault, Darrel and Debra Chennault, and Dale Chennault. 

He is preceded in death by Wanda Akin Roeder, his first wife and mother of his children; and also by his second wife, Dorothy Jean Chennault Roeder.  

Gilbert was known his whole life as a man of his word, as someone who could be counted on to show up, work hard, do the right thing, honor his commitments, be of help, be able to build or to fix almost anything, and to do all of these things with a good sense of humor and some fun teasing. He learned the values of frugality, self-sufficiency and high standards growing up in the Great Depression, but was overly generous to others with his time, his many talents, and his patience for teaching how to do what he could do. He spent over thirty years of his career at Shell Chemical, rising through the ranks to ultimately be supervisor over a large resin unit. He was able to retire in his mid-50’s and was blessed with good health and an abundance of energy until his final years. He spent his retirement enjoying travel throughout the American West and Alaska with varying assortments of his family in tow, or tinkering with a myriad of projects in his workshop. His legacy of morality, commitment, honor and humor will outlive him for generations. A visitation for family and friends will be held at Sterling-White on Monday, April 9, 2018 from 5:30pm-8pm.  Funeral services will be held at Sterling-White on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 10am with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown.  Flowers are welcome, or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Baytown First Church of the Nazarene  missions fund, P.O.
