Tribute

Gregory Lloyd Coker was born in Baytown, Texas at the Baytown Hospital on May 10, 1957. He grew up in Baytown, Houston and Spring Branch… Greg graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1975. He attended Lee College where he enjoyed his time as a cheerleader for the basketball team and where he made lasting friendships. He then attended Texas A&M University before serving in the Navy, after which he worked in various management positions in the fast food industry. Greg then attended the University of Houston, where he received his bachelor’s degree in education, before going on to find his calling as an elementary school teacher in the Houston ISD. Eventually becoming a beloved librarian, Greg would encounter every student on campus throughout the school week, regaling them with his costumed antics as he taught them lifelong skills in the wonderful world of books and reading.

But Greg was far more than the sum of the facts of his time on Earth.

Where do you find the words to encapsulate the life of Greg Coker? He was all at once, bigger than life, lived out loud, and yet had walls built up over which no one was allowed.

He could be loud, hilarious, compassionate, embracing… he loved his family, particularly his nieces and nephews. He embraced his students with gusto and color. He loved his time in the Navy. He loved playing spades in Joan’s living room, going to the movies at The Brunson Theater or the Decker Drive-in, and driving his cousins to play practice. Greg’s friends from Spring Branch High School meant the world to him, and he kept in touch with many of them.

He was a son, a brother, a student, a teacher, a cousin, uncle, nephew, friend, best friend… Greg was all of that and so much more.  Words fail to capture exactly what Greg was, is, and had meant to so many. Greg was proceeded in death by his father, Wayne Coker, Sr., mother and step-father Lois and George Thorn, stepbrother Joe Eaton, nephew Willie Eaton, and nephew Joel Coker.

Gregory is survived by sister Terri (Mike) Bogie, brother Wayne (Sterle) Coker Jr., Stepsister Linda Crider, stepsister Sherry Crochet, stepbrother Curtis Eaton, stepmother Betty Coker and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers are; Eric Bogie, Jason Vasquez, Chad Trousdale, Luca Trousdale, Brett Vasquez, Michael Yolland, and Lane Trousdale. Serving as honorary pallbearers are; Nick Coker and Curtis Eaton.
