John L Hughes

Tribute

John Hughes, 72, went to be with the Lord at 2:10pm on January 2, 2019. He was born in Goose Creek, Texas, on October 16, 1946. He was the oldest of five children born to James John Hughes, Jr. and Bonnie Rose Compton Hughes. He was raised on Jones Road in Highlands. He was a graduate of Robert E Lee, Lee College and attended University of Houston. John started his years as a fireman at Highlands Volunteer working with his dad. He held many positions during his service. He was honored for 50 years of service in September of 2015. He joined the City of Baytown on October 1, 1970 as First Firefighter hired – before that you were hired as a Driver Trainee. He moved up ranks and retired April 30, 2006 as Lieutenant. John enjoyed woodworking, and was an avid reader. He collected books and comic books for many years. He loved cats and had several over the years. John will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sue Hughes Franta; and his former wife, Glenda Hughes.

John is survived by his wife, Ruth Byford Hughes; his sister, Becky and Steve Barnett; his brothers, Richard and Jean Hughes, Dr. James and De Hughes; his aunt, Florence Compton; uncle, Billy and Dorothy Compton survive John. He is also survived by his daughters, Katrina Williams and Michal Hughes; and grandchildren, Madison and Blayne Williams, and Lyric and Ava Vera. He is survived by nieces and nephews.

A special Thank You to Harbor Hospice – especially Terry and Donna. His former coworkers and firefighters will serve as pallbearers.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 10:00am to 11:00am at Sterling-White Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 11:00am.
