Thurmon Joseph Ickes

July 6, 1924 ~ December 31, 2017 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Thurmon Joseph Ickes, Sr., 93, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 31, 2017. He was born on July 6, 1924 in Lucedale, Mississippi to John William Ickes and Millie Dixon Ickes. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas, where he left early to serve in the U. S. Navy from 1942 – 1946. Once he was honorably discharged, he married his wife Bertie Whitaker Ickes on June 21, 1946 and they were married for over 71 years. He worked as an Insurance Salesman for Western and Southern Life Insurance Company for 39 years before retiring. Thurmon was mild mannered and being raised as a child during the Great Depression, he never let anything go to waste. He enjoyed traveling around the world with his wife, taking cruises along the Mississippi River, owning a camp house at B.A. Steinhagen Lake (Dam B) at Campers Cove, and also had a condo on the beach near San Luis Pass. Thurmon enjoyed trotline fishing, collecting tools and loved his sons and grandchildren. He was a member of the Baytown V.F.W. Post 912 and the Baytown American Legion Post 323 where he was a member for 72 years. Thurmon lived a life full of adventure and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and also his son, John E. Ickes, and daughter in law, Cathy Ickes.

Thurmon is survived by his beloved wife, Bertie Ickes; sons, Thurmon J. Ickes, Jr., and wife Marsha Ann, Jackie Ickes and wife Joan, and Jerry Ickes and wife Jeanene; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, at Sterling-White Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 also at Sterling White Funeral Home. Entombment will be in Earthman Memory Gardens Mausoleum, 8624 Garth Rd, Baytown, TX 77521.
